How to Take Care of Your Nails While the Beauty Salons Are Closed

With the extended closure of beauty services, including nail salons, that manicure appointment on your calendar is likely not happening anytime soon. But if you look on the bright side, now is a good time to give your nails a break from gel polish and strengthen your natural nails. We talked to Nail Me founder Sandra Chow, who shared with us tips for at-home nail care, including a DIY hand mask and toxic-free products to add to your social distancing regimen.

Use an old toothbrush to clean under your gel nails
“When we wash our hands, the area underneath our nails is often overlooked. Simply put some hand soap on an old toothbrush, gently scrub the areas under and around your nails to clean thoroughly—this helps exfoliate dead skin, too.”

Trim your nails properly
“To reduce the chance of getting ingrown nails, cut straight across the nail, instead of diagonally. Then, smooth uneven edges using a file in one direction only, as filing back and forth can weaken your nail.”

Choose toxic-free nail polishes
“Choose nail polishes that are at least 7-free, meaning they are made without harmful chemicals (the three most disruptive ingredients are formaldehyde, dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and toluene). To remove your nail polish, use a gentle nail polish remover like Ella Mila’s Soy Nail Polish remover, which removes colour effectively and moisturises the nails at the same time. Acetone removers, on the other hand, can dry out your skin and damage the nails easily.”

Moisturise your hands with natural products
“Use 100% natural hand products to moisturise your hands. Nail Me has recently launched a hand product series in collaboration with Ole Beauty, which contains abyssinian oil (ala crambe seed oil), which softens the skin and reduces wrinkles. It’s worth mentioning that the trio also has 99.99% antimicrobial efficacy with natural alcohol derived from wheat, which can protect the skin against coronavirus. Choose foods that are good for your nails
Omega-3 from fish oil, vitamin A, B, and C can help hydrate your nails. 

DIY hand treatment
Keep your hands soft and moisturised at home with a natural scrub by mixing brown sugar and olive oil (add honey for extra nourishing effects). Scrub your hands gently in circular motions. Then, rinse it off with water and pat dry with a clean towel. Next, apply cuticle oil (we use Ole Beauty’s cuticle oil) to massage the cuticle area. Afterwards, mix the cuticle oil with your favourite hand cream to create a hand mask. Wrap your hands with plastic gloves and leave them on for 10-15 mins. For an overnight treatment, simply slip a pair of cotton gloves over your hands before going to bed. You’ll wake up the next day to soft, youthful hands.
