Beat Hong Kong’s Humidity with Hair Care Tips from Top Hairdressers

Like our skin, our hair goes through phases. Weather conditions, hair products, our lifestyle and hormonal changes can take a toll on our hair, leaving it dry, frizzy and brittle.

With Hong Kong humidity at its all-time high, the humid environment can take us from a good hair day to a bad hair day real quick. We’re talking about frizzy tresses, which are caused by opened cuticles that allow moisture in the air to penetrate the hair shaft.

To help you battle against the hair’s worst enemy, we’ve asked Hong Kong’s top hairdressers for practical hair care tips to keep smooth, healthy-looking hair all summer long.

  • Cold rinse your hair
It turns out the temperature of your water may just be important as the product you’re using. “If you can handle it, use cold water during the shampoo and conditioning process, if not give a quick cold rinse at the end, after the hair is being conditioned,” says David Gouygou, co-founder and director of BruneBlonde.

It’s not like you have to shower with cold water the whole time. You can start with warm water, which opens the cuticle and allows your shampoo and conditioner to penetrate the hair. Once you leave the conditioner on for a few minutes, rinsing it out with cooler water will help seal the conditioner into the hair. “Cold water helps to smooth and close the cuticle of the hair, making it less prone to frizz and also enhances shine,” he adds.

  • Keep your hair moisturised
Moisture is key to beautiful, healthy-looking hair. “Dry hair is like a sponge, it absorbs all the humidity in the air,” says Emmanuel Faipoux, co-founder and artistic director of Emmanuel F. Using a pH balanced hair care can help seal hair cuticles without strippig your hair sebum, which is a natural oil that keeps the hair healthy and moisturised.

“Use an efficient moisturising shampoo and conditioner every time you wash your hair. Do a deep moisturising treatment twice a week to make sure the hair cuticles are closed with a natural hair pH between 4.5-5.5, which is the best hair quality condition you can have,” he advises. For those with curly hair, he suggests applying Organic Colour Systems’ Aqua Boost Leave-In Conditioner before blow-drying to tame the frizz from humidity.

  • Invest in an In-salon treatment
Hair care is just like skincare—there’re plenty of skincare products that work incredibly well to help us maintain healthy skin at home, but nothing quite compares to a facial treatment with an aesthetician. When it comes to dealing with hair issues, sometimes it’s best to leave them to a hair professional.

“The OMG Treatment is SHHH’s secret recipe comprising a high concentration of potent ingredients such as plant stem cells, ginseng extract, collagen, amino acids and keratin—which are also used in the OMG hair care line, selected specifically to transform dull, damaged hair into bouncy, gorgeous locks,” says Marvin Lin, founder and creative director of SHHH. “After the treatment, clients can prolong the benefits of the treatment with OMG hair products, which are designed to give you that in-salon glow from the comfort of your home,” she adds.

  1. Seal Your Strands With a Serum
Forget about hair oil—hair serum is your best weapon against humidity. “The OMG ‘Ready to Glow Leave-In Treatment’ is an award-winning product with anti-UV properties to protect your hair from heat, UV and oxidative damage. Simply apply it on towel-dried or blow dried hair for the best results,” says Marvin.

Hair serums are typically used as styling products to add shine and smooth hair, especially on hot summer days in Hong Kong. “BruneBlonde’s Coco Blush serum adds a protective layer to the hair—just a small amount on the mid-lengths and ends of your hair will give a sleek and shiny finish,” says David.

  • Massage your scalp
The health of the scalp is crucial to the health of the hair. Regular scalp massages help to increase blood circulation to the hair follicles, creating a healthy environment for hair growth.
  • “Using your fingertips, gently massage your scalp from the hairline to the back of your head for 5 to 20 minutes every day. This is best performed with OMG Scalp Shampoo and Conditioner, which are designed to cleanse and restore the scalp’s water-oil balance,” says Marvin. Say goodbye to greasy hair!
