Balinese Massage with Hot Stones is one of the signature treatments at The Bulgari Resort, Bali’s ocean-front spa. The two-hour pampering session starts off with body exfoliation and an ESPA Facial Cleanse. Handayani elaborates, “Warm aromatherapy oils are poured onto the centre of the body and massaged into the skin using long, deep sweeping movements that encompass the whole body. The treatment is unique because we combine deep tissue massage (Balinese massage) techniques with volcanic basalt lava stones for massaging the body. A relaxing scalp massage is also included.”

The Peninsula Spa at The Peninsula Hong Kong, uses warmed basalt stones for massage treatments and chilled rose quartz crystals for facial treatments. Codner finds that many clients do not like the feeling of cold stones; therefore, chilled stones are primarily used for facials. She adds, “We use chilled stones around the eyes to help reduce fine lines, wrinkles and puffiness. They are a wonderful relief for sinus pains and headaches.”

Highlighting the unique features of the treatment offered at the spa, she says, “Our Chakra Balancing Massage (using hot stones), which includes a full body exfoliation to remove dead skin cells and help improve circulation and the removal of toxins, is very effective. Warmed basalt stones are strategically placed on the body in an anticlockwise position with the therapist following the movement of the client’s breath, as well as in the palms of the hands, where several chakras are located.” The hot stones are cleaned after each treatment and are placed in moonlight in order to recharge the energy that the stones carry. The wellness spa concept at Haikou Spa at Mission Hills includes an in-depth consultation with its Traditional Chinese Medicine doctor. Chu at Haikou Spa says, “Before enjoying the Hot Stone treatment, our professional doctor of TCM will pinpoint your most recent health status via pulse reading and gain a deeper understanding of what you need. After the consultation, our therapist will leave heated stones in specific points to improve the flow of energy in your body according to the consultation record.” Its Volcanic Energy Massage stimulates the body’s detoxification systems through the use of warm volcanic stones and chilled crystals. The two types of stones are used alternatively to trigger chemical release within the body. It relieves muscle pain and stimulates the body’s positive energy flow.
