New York’s Spa Gems

There’s hardly any city that is as exciting as New York, but allow yourself the luxury to recharge in some of the most sumptuous spas and experience the buzzing city’s best with your body refreshed and mind revived.

Relaxing at a spa is not usually the first activity that comes to mind when people think of Manhattan, but it may well be the perfect antidote to all the shopping and eating, musicals and museums. After traipsing from Mid-town to the West Village to SoHo and back, your mind and body will thank you for a quiet hour to relax and recharge. New Yorkers like to work hard, play hard and relax right – if they can find the time for it. So the city has it all: sleek spas on the Upper East Side, Art Deco gems in Midtown, Roman-inspired baths in trendy TriBeCa and exclusive wellness facilities near Wall Street. As the city continues to evolve and change, spas are popping up in almost every neighbourhood, so chances are no matter where you are or what you’re looking for, you’ll find it here.

A fully stocked wine cellar at a spa may have seemed counterintuitive at one time, but that was before Caudalie discovered the potency grapes and began exporting its Vinothérapie treatments to the rest of the world. The Bordeaux-based spa brand first opened at New York’s iconic The Plaza hotel in 2008, offering a full range of treatments based on the antioxidant powers of grapevine and grape polyphenols. The space welcomes you with delicately lit corridors and treatment rooms painted in warm tones of burgundy and green. Couples can opt for barrel baths – the tub is literally encased in an oak barrel – and the menu also includes a range of signature anti-ageing treatments. The new Premier Cru Ultimate Anti-Aging Facial features gentle exfoliation, massage, a hydrogel mask with Resveratrol-Oleyl, which stimulates collagen and elastin production, followed by the application of Premier Cru cream, chalk full of the brand’s patented active ingredients. A hydrogel patch concentrated with red vine, horse chestnut and ivy leaf adds the final touch, reducing any redness or puffiness. The focus at Caudalie is on health and longevity, but not without a touch of French indulgence. After your treatment, snack on organic grapes in the lounge or sip on a selection of red and white wines to round out your vino-spa experience.
