The Master of towering stilettos, Christian Louboutin draws inspiration from his exotic travel journeys to create his often colourful collections. Find out where the shoe virtuoso loves to spend time.

TREASURED HOTEL OR RESORT

CL: Hotel Raphael Paris, a perfect, medium- sized palace that hasn’t changed since the 19th century. It’s in the middle of Paris, but somewhere you can hide, be a recluse, take a love week.

FAVOURITE HOLIDAY DESTINATION

CL: I travel constantly and often revisit places for work and pleasure; favourite places of mine are Cairo, California, Luxor and Beirut. Of all, I love Lisbon, it is a beautiful capital city with fantastic buildings and generally a great atmosphere. Its position, directly looking out to sea gives me the impression that I am looking to the other side of the world. It feels like a city with possibilities.

MY TRAVEL ATTIRE

CL: Wherever I go I always carry ties from Charvet, even if I know that I am not going to wear them. I like to have at least a few that I can look at and maybe not put on, but look at the colours and it always puts me in a good mood.

3 THINGS TO PACK

CL: Goggles. I often go for a swim in a hotel pool. A backpack! I often start travels to multiple countries with a lot of bags and send them back when I leave each country for the next. Measuring tape. When I travel, I happen to find nice furniture.

MUST-HAVE ITEM OF THE SEASON

CL: Style is a very personal thing, I couldn’t possibly.

FAVOURITE SPA FOR SOME ‘ME’ TIME

CL: Home, this is my sanctuary and the only place where I can absolutely relax.

MY SIGNATURE SCENT

CL: 4711 cologne. I absolutely love fragrances that have a fresh source; those that make you feel clean. When I was a little boy, I sprayed cologne on myself each time I visited the bathroom. So I associate the smell with my childhood.

MY BEAUTY TIP

CL: If I am in Paris, every single morning I take a hammam. I have a steam room in my apartment. I’ve been in very cold hotels many times. You wake up very early and you’re cold, and you go shower and it’s still cold. I hate it. I thought, whenever I build my own apartment, I want one feeling to disappear entirely from my life, which is the idea of being cold in the morning. So I have this hammam. I press a button, and when I go inside my bathroom, it’s very hot.

MY TOP PLACE TO DINE

CL: L’Epi d’Or on Rue Jean-Jacques Rousseau, this is the restaurant right next door to my office. It’s delicious and a super-classic bistro-type Parisian restaurant. There is a back door, and it is where I go if I don’t want to be interrupted five times by my office staff.

ON MY IPOD

CL: Mika, the last album: The Origin of Love, and Tina Turner.

SOMETHING I CAN’T STOP WATCHING

CL: Blue Velvet by David Lynch. David and I crossed paths in Paris through a mutual friend when he worked on his exhibition at the Cartier Foundation. His fiancée was intent on having these shoes with red soles that she’d spotted in a store, and he wanted to get them but didn’t know where! We often saw each other after meeting in the store, and he asked me to design shoes for his exhibition, which I did. We’ve been friends ever since.
