Michael Kors is expanding in Asia with a new flagship in Shanghai, as well as launching his very own cosmetics line, adding yet another category to his growing fashion stable.

According to Michael Kors, there are two kinds of designers, ones who are happy to be holed up in their atelier, surrounded by their entourage, reclusive to the point where you’ll only get a quick peek and a wave at the end of their runway show, and then there are those who love to be in the spotlight and interact with their clients (in Kors’ case a huge celebrity following, including Michelle Obama). Obviously, Kors finds himself in the latter category (note that he loves to walk the whole runway), exuding a strong sense of accomplishment and taking great pride in his self-made, namesake fashion empire (which includes his main line, Michael Kors, and his diffusion line, MICHAEL Michael Kors), boasting fashion and accessories, but also watches, jewellery and now even cosmetics.

Well loved for his glam designs and his witty sense of humour, which thousands of people have been able to attest to during his ten seasons atProject Runway, where he was one of the judges nurturing young designers. Fans have even created mash-ups of his best quips – who could forget his descriptive critiques like “the only accessory she could use with this is a wand”, or “something a Teletubby would wear to a party”, or “transvestite flamenco dancer at a funeral”.

But most of all, the tanned and naturally blonde Michael Kors is known for creating the vision of the sporty, sexy all-American glam girl who just wants to feel good. Embodied by a celebrity or your next-door neighbour, the Michael Kors babe is visually recognisable the world over. And perhaps, it all started when his mother, a former Revlon model, remarried and a five-year-old Kors styled her wedding dress, asking his mom to take off the bows, who at that point probably became the original sleek Kors girl.
