Safe Haven

In November 2013, Super Typhoon Haiyan hit the provinces of Leyte and Samar in the Philippines, devastating the area and displacing numerous families. The Peninsula Hotels decided to assist victims who were left homeless by the disaster through the Hope for the Philippines campaign, raising funds to build The Peninsula – Gawad Kalinga Village in Maribi, Leyte, which is scheduled to complete this December. Spanning nearly 10,000 sqm of land, the village consists of 75 houses, a playground and a multi-purpose hall. Working together with Gawad Kalinga and several local non-governmental organisations there, The Peninsula Manila will identify 75 families from the costal town of San Roque who will move into the village, on the basis of ‘sweat equity’ rather than financial equity.
